Today I am ranting about different charities and heaven knows there is enough of them!Let me start with the biggie......Cancer. How many billions of dollars, over the years has been raised by this charity? Has it been successful in finding a cure yet? NO. In my opinion 85% of the money given in memorials and donations has gone to administration costs. I had a friend whose husband was dying of the disease and he had no insurance, so he turned for help from this charity to have a hospital bed at home so he could die there. They refused him....how's that for charity folks?what would the cost of renting a bed have been for them, but he was turned down and family members chipped in to see that he got it.I have to admit I have given a lot to this charity myself but only because it was stated by the family of the person(s) who died of this plague.I decided then that it would not happen again. I would rather give to those who are left behind.I could name so many more like heart and stroke, diabetes, muscular dystrophy, autism, and so on..... Several time I have received letters in the mail with a nickel attached asking for donations. If all those thousands of nickels were kept it would make a hefty donation I would imagine. I actually sent the nickel back, once saying "here is my donation...you need this nickel more than I do "
If and when someone comes up with a cure for any affliction, I would gladly see that they got my gratitude and the donation to go with it.
I still give to charity, but my emphasis now is on those who cannot help themselves. The pets people discard like garbage. There should be a law that says everyone who owns a pet of whatever nature and doesn't have it properly spayed, neutered or otherwise, be fined so heavily it would keep the animal charities going for years. To me it is like having another child in the house and should be treated with the same respect as any other member of the family.
I also donate to the charities that help to make a child's life a bit brighter. Those who are born handicapped or abused, living in orphanages. Like a weekend fishing trip or a visit to a concert or just so I can I put a smile on a child's face, somewhere.
All those food charities that send food and wheat and school supplies to Africa? Most of it rots on docks somewhere as a lot of the destinations have no roads or means of transporting it to them or else it lands in the hands of the black marketeers. Many people don't seem to realize where exactly their money goes.....but it definitely isn't where they thought. I applaud those who serve in these third world places trying to help but sooner or later they go back to their lives while the unfortunate ones just fall prey to the way it was before they arrived. No one can cure the ills of the world and I would say that since we all have to pay taxes that all charities not showing any progress in their efforts be taxed as well. If not taxed, then given a deadline to show results or their license to be a charity revoked.
In closing I would like to say I am not trying to attack cancer in particular, as I have had it myself, as did my mother, a daughter-in-law and my husband and not one penny did I see from their charity along the way.
